Jaroslava Lialia Kuchma was born in Pidhaitsi, Ukraine, 1943, and immigrated to the U.S. in 1949, where Chicago eventually became her new home. She
received her BFA from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She studied and practiced printmaking, photography,
calligraphy, and tapestry and assisted Ivan Dykyj in the ornamentation (including gold leaf application) of the Ukrainian Church of
Sts. Volodymyr and Olha in Chicago. She has participated in numerous exhibitions, including the following in 2014-2015: American
Tapestry Biennial 10, Visions Art Museum, San Diego; Focus: Fiber 2014, Erie Art Museum; Dubuque Museum of Art 2015 Biennial
Exhibition; and Art of the Loom at the Kentucky Museum of Art & Craft, Louisville. She has received several grants from the Illinois
Arts Council as well as the Governor’s Award, and her work has been mentioned in numerous publications, including Fiberarts
magazine and the American Tapestry Alliance’s Tapestry Topics.
