Marta Huley Legeckis was born in Lviv, Ukraine, in 1943; immigrated to the U.S. with her parents in 1948. She attended the HS of Music and Art in New York City and graduated from The City College of New York with a BFA and MFA. For the past 30 years, she has run her own
calligraphy business in the Washington, DC, area. Among her clients are the White House, the Departments of State and of the
Interior, the National Gallery, and numerous embassies. She has also been President, Vice President, and Workshop Chairman of
the Washington Calligraphers Guild. In 2006 she was Co-Director of Letterforum, an international calligraphy conference. She is
currently on the faculty of the Smithsonian, where she teaches calligraphy. About 10 years ago, her interest returned to fine art,
especially watercolor. She enjoys experimenting with limited palette, and at times combines her watercolor and calligraphic skills
to create calligraphic paintings as opposed to strictly calligraphic pieces. In her work, the intent is to entice viewers outside the
realm of everyday life and open up to them a richer appreciation of their surroundings.
