Ukrainian-born Alexander Archipenko (1887-1964) established himself as a progressive sculptor in the artistic milieu that formed the historic avant-garde. He connected with art movements such as Cubism and Futurism. After living in Paris (c. 1908-20) and Berlin (c. 1921-23), Archipenko immigrated to the United States, where he worked prolifically until his death in 1964.

Written by Jaroslaw Leshko, Professor Emeritus of Art (Smith College) and guest curator of the Alexander Archipenko: Vision and Continuity exhibition at The Ukrainian Museum (Apr-Sep, 2005), the book is much more than just a beautiful catalogue. Taking a comparative approach, Leshko juxtaposes the works of Archipenko with his celebrated contemporaries - Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Marcel Duchamp, among others. The book is an in-depth study of Archipenko's life work, his evolution as an artist, and experimentation with various media, as the author traces the artist's migration across time and space, describes his exhibitions and examines his relationships with fellow artists.
