Author and exhibition curator, Bohdan S. Kordan, surveys 42 maps ranging from the mid-sixteenth century to the end of the eighteenth, following the development of European mapmaking with respect to Ukrainian territories. The story begins shortly before the rise of the Cossack Hetmanate, and ends just around the time of its demise under Tsarist Russia.
In addition to the historical overviews, Kordan points to the artistic value of these early maps, many of which are decorated with beautifully creative cartouches that themselves often tell a story.
