Catalogue for the exhibition Ukrainian Sculpture and Icons: A History of Their Rescue at The Ukrainian Museum in New York, December 13, 2006 through February 27, 2007.

From the collection of the President of Ukraine, Viktor Yushchenko, and the collections of Petro Honchar, Ihor Hryniv, Volodymyr Koziuk, Vasyl Vovkun, and Lidia Lykhach

Ukrainian Sculpture and Icons: A History of Their Rescue exemplifies the loss of Ukraines cultural heritage during the twentieth century. The Soviet-era destruction of the country's museums and museum personnel, and the systemic destruction of a cultural heritage is alarming, shocking, and ultimately tragic. Most of the works in this exhibition are from private collections, signaling a revival of interest in, and appreciation of, Ukraine's cultural heritage. At the same time, in the years since the country's independence, demolished architectural landmarks are being rebuilt, medieval and Baroque houses of worship are being renovated, and cultural patronage is slowly being renewed. This painful process, undertaken on a foundation of destruction, requires both widespread support and academic discourse. The importance of current preservation efforts underscores the significance of an exhibition such as Ukrainian Sculpture and Icons: A History of Their Rescue.
